The Hawkes Bay Museum and Gallery was fully redeveloped from 2010 - 2013 and is now called the Hawkes Bay MTG.
MTG stands for Museum, Theatre, Gallery and thats exactly what we have. Three separate buildings have been linked together to create a modern facility, yet reminiscent of it's heritage.
On display in the museum is a mix of the latest technological displays, yet still encompassing a large range of classic museum pieces. The 1931 earthquake exhibits have always been popular with rotating collections meaning there is regularly something new to see. The Museum is now of world standard and this will allow travelling international exhibitions, expanding the diversity on offer. See the museum exhibitions list for what's on right now.
MTG's Gallery has nationally significant pieces that share the spirit of New Zealand. The collection is very New Zealand-centric and you'll recognise many pieces (both art and objects) from your childhood. A real trip down memory lane.
The art deco-style MTG Theatre was originally built in 1977 and hosts live performances, talks and films. With 330 seats it can house a crowd decent enough to create some atmosphere, yet still be cosy and intimate. Both night and day events are held and it could be anything from concert recitals, to arthouse cinema or theatrical performances - a real cultural treat. Hawkes Bay MTG History
The Hawkes Bay MTG complex has actually stood on the same spot since 1859 in various forms, from philosophical societies to theatres. What stands today is a mix of a 1930's building, a 1970's theatre and a 2013-built, modern road frontage.
With $18m spent on the transformation, this Hawkes Bay MTG is arguably one of the nicest cultural complexes in New Zealand. The original art gallery and museum building from the 1930's has been restored and expanded. The original 1970's theatre has been restored and is again the home of local theatre. The gallery and foyer are completely new construction - an impressive road frontage with all its glass, overlooking the ocean.
